Road America Race Recap
International GT brought a full field to the 4+ mile circuit west of Milwaukee. We were excited to have an entire weekend of streaming for all four International GT races from Road America. The streaming is on YouTube on the Racing America channel.
The weekend started with Thursday testing and Friday qualifying before our first sprint race. After a tight sprint race with great battles throughout the field, many of the IGT cars joined a couple dozen of the Trans Am cars for a police-escorted parade from the track to downtown Plymouth and a huge crowd at the Cheese Capital Festival.
On track we went caution free all weekend! At the front of the field in the GTX category CHARLES WICHT #7 took the overall win in all three sprint races. Charles and his CWR Racing brought a full stable of race cars to Road America including Wicht’s Bentley.
Wicht selected to sit out the enduro and GTX contender and newcomer to International GT ROBERT GARZA #67 in an Audi R8 with Extreme Velocity Motorsports captured the enduro class win.
In Maranello Cup, Gotham Motorsports returned to IGT competition and current Maranello Cup Champion YOUSUF NABI #03 won all three sprint races. Gotham is scheduled to race with International GT the remainder of the season but also has eyes on a much longer enduro with another series this Fall.
With that in mind, Nabi allowed his coach and co-driver DARIO CAPITANIO and Ferrari-ace DAMIANO FLORAVANTI to race the #03 Ferrari 488 in the IGT enduro. The duo started last (did not qualify) and worked their way through the field to finish sixth overall and first in class.
The GT4.R and GT992 categories saw some of the best racing all weekend. In GT4.R, REG WILLIAMS #008, Goldcrest Motorsports, made his annual trek to Wisconsin mixing racing with an at-track reunion with his brothers from the area. Reg swept the GT4R category wins in all four races, including the overall win in the enduro with co-driver TOM LONG. But it was far from easy as he was both stalking Wicht and being closely chased by the rest of the field.
Current Mission Foods GT3 Cup Champion, G MICHAEL MERRITT #899 had a short racing weekend as he experienced mechanical issues, but he did race a very strong sprint race 1 finishing second behind Williams. Michael hung around and became the head cheerleader for his CWR Racing teammates.
MATT COHN #210, Off Leash Motorsports continued his march toward this year’s championship with a comfortable lead. Matt finished on the GT4.R podium for all four races on different steps. He took a trio of third place finishes in the sprint races and joined with co-driver KEVIN CLIFFORD in the enduro for a third.
Mission Foods hosted our social on Saturday night, and everyone had a great time enjoying Mission Foods nachos and Wisconsin’s own Spotted Cow beer. JUAN GONZALEZ #81 also enjoyed success on track taking a second place in sprint race 2 and in the enduro which he shared with BUTCH LEITZINGER. We especially love this photo of Juan going by the Mission Foods Beach!
Matrix Motorsports arrived at Road America with four entries and BILL OLIVER #058 posted the best average finish over the four races in the GT992 category. Bill took three wins in the first two sprints and the enduro that included co-driver BRUNO CARNEIRO. He finished the weekend with a second in the final sprint race.
Teammate CLIFF CAYER #08 also in the GT992 category stood on the podium for all races too. Cliff’s best finish came Sunday with a win in sprint race 3. He took a pair of seconds in sprint 2 and the enduro and a third to start the weekend in Friday’s sprint.
Also in GT992 MUSTAFA BAKIR #06 had his best race of the weekend with a second in sprint 1 but was strong all weekend finishing just off the podium.
NICK GROOMBRIDGE #216 returned to GT992 competition with SpeedSport at Road America. Nick took a trio of third place finishes in the category in two of the sprint races and the enduro.
The final member of the Matrix Motorsports gang, ERIC GRAY #991 brought out the same GT4.0 Porsche that son LIAM had such success at Mid-Ohio a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately it was a short race weekend for Eric. We’re not saying Liam used up the car at Mid-O with all those wins, but dad ran into early and fatal problems during the Road America test day ending his weekend early. Meanwhile Liam was on a European holiday with his mates. It’s good to be 18.
Speaking of 18, we all got to take part in a very special 18th birthday celebration at Road America for COLEMAN HALL #79. Coleman turned 18 on Friday with a win in the CAY4.0 category. It was a good weekend for the very fast, newly legal teenager, as he swept the wins in the Stuttgart Cup class, taking first place in all four races.
Close behind Coleman was CWR Racing teammate ROBERT GEE #819 in the CAY4.0 class with his own kind of sweep. Bob was second to Hall in all four races, determinedly pushing Hall all the way to the checkered flag!
With seven entries the 4-liter Cayman class was the largest of the categories with great battles throughout. However, at the end of the day(s) it was another sweep in third, with JOE RIZZO #24 finishing third in all four races. Rizzo was joined by team boss at BGB Motorsports, JOHN TECCE in the enduro.
We were introduced to a Road America “local” in RYAN SZYJAKOWSKI from Forty48 Competition based in New Holstein, WI just minutes from the circuit. Ryan raced his CAY3.8 and swept the category all weekend. Ryan didn’t always make it to the podium though, as Forty48 Competition had entries in every group at Road America including Trans Am and Formula which left Ryan running between getting cars on grid and our podium.
It was a special weekend at Road America and thanks to our partners at PIRELLI TIRES, we were able to give away two sets of P-Zero tires to Reg Williams and Bob Gee.
The folks at Road America warmly welcomed Racing America with custom made cow bells going to all the Sunday podium finishers! And we couldn’t leave Wisconsin without at least a few cheesehead photos!
