The challenges of 2020 have made for an interesting year. International GT has made a number of schedule adjustments to keep up with a moving target. With the cancellation of Lime Rock, Watkins Glen and Savannah, IGT confirms that the final races at Road Atlanta and Daytona will be double points events. This opens the door for any driver that has participated in one previous event in 2020 to be eligible for the championship.
VIR resulted in a big swing in the points battle. The tightest battle…with a separation of just half a point…is in the Maranello Cup. Benoit Bergeron stayed in Canada and Colin Cohen swept the field at VIR. Now with Benoit at 219.5 and Colin at 219 points it is a toss up if Bergeron can repeat or if Cohen will win his first Maranello Cup Championship.
It is very crowded at the top of the Mission Foods GT3 Cup Trophy championship. Chuck Smithee came into the VIR event in second and left in the same position. However he did pick up a load of points toward the championship, meanwhile Tom Pank leapt into first place. Prior to VIR Nicholas Groombridge led in the points championship however a misfortune during wet qualifying sent him home without racing and dropped him to fifth in the standings.
The “sleepers” to watch, Bob Wisen sitting in third and Lukas Pank now jumped to fourth in the standings. With the final two races at Road Atlanta and Daytona counting for double points….this battle is anyone’s to win!
The Stuttgart Cup is led by current series champion, Will Wachs who raced at Sebring, Road America and Mid Ohio but engine delivery woes had him sit out VIR. Will is followed by Tim Horrell who we saw at Sebring, Mid Ohio and VIR. There are several others who have the potential to make a run at the championship including Russell Wittenberg and Scott Kee.

The long running historic battle of Ferrari vs Porsche continues at International GT. Click on the photo above to see if the Stuttgart Steed or Prancing Horse emerges victorious at VIR. Series Founder Bill Riddell, Colin Cohen and Bob Wisen (insert – right to left) have quite the battle. Stay tuned to the end to see who comes out on top.

The next International GT race will be the penultimate for the 2020 season – a rescheduled Spring date at beautiful Road Atlanta. November 19-22 IGT will visit one of the most challenging and best loved circuits on the calendar in the red-clay hills of North Georgia.
