Watson Glen Race

International GT made its fifth stop of the 2016 season in the New York finger lakes region at iconic Watkins Glen International, September 7-11. Racing in front of record crowds, qualifying and the first sprint race was dominated by Mark Sandridge in his Porsche GT3 Cup car. Arguably one of the most competitive categories of the weekend, in addition to Sandridge’s sprint race win, the 3.8 Porsche GT3 Cup category saw two new 2016 winners. Driving the JOIA #32 Porsche, Brad Blum and co-driver Ron Zitza battled for the win in Saturday’s endurance race.

While Sunday’s sprint race victory went to Juan Gonzalez, in the Mission Foods Porsche. Also posting a win in Friday’s first sprint race was, Steven Hill in the Ferrari 430 category. Hill went on to win the second sprint race on Sunday, while newcomer to International GT, Barry Fromberg won in his first event, taking the enduro win on Saturday in his beautiful silver F430. Both Hill and Fromberg’s cars are prepared by Norwood Auto Italia.

Bill Riddell had a tight battle with Rick Stavola, with Riddell ultimately finishing first in the Cayman 3.4 class in Friday’s sprint race. Bill would also go onto win the enduro race on Saturday. Riddell’s #05 Cayman prepared by Racelink would win the weekend’s other sprint race to sweep the event, however the Sunday race was driven by Shane Lewis. In the other Cayman category, Alan Brynjolfsson also swept the weekend winning in both sprint races and co-drove with Chris Hall to win the enduro, in his Volt Lighting Cayman. Racing with International GT for the first time in 2016 was Scott Welliver in the iconic liveried Golf Racing baby blue and orange Porsche Cayman. Scott and his co-driver Peter Argetsinger, both very well known to Watkins Glen fans, fought hard among the Caymans and finished on the podium in all three races. Scott also provided his excellent Glenora Wines to the International GT cocktail reception on Saturday night, which was greatly appreciated and much enjoyed by all.

In the Porsche GT3 Cup 3.6 class, first time International GT participant, David Seuss scored victories in both the Saturday endurance and the Sunday sprint events. While Friday’s sprint race was won by John Mauro, he suffered a mechanical failure in the enduro race. Taking the top spot in the Ferrari 355 category, Colin Cohen won the first sprint race but followed the way of Mauro, suffering a transmission failure in the enduro that ended the weekend for his car.
